Main purpose of job
Working as a Senior Engineer 1, the job�s main purpose is to support XXX activities in the global telecommunications hardware engineering arena, performing design, development, documentation, verification and production assistance for the hardware BB sections of XXX Telecom products.
Depending on the structure and size of the team in which you are placed, you may be technically responsible for a maximum of two more junior engineers.
Line Organisation
This position reports to the Hardware Group Manager within the Telecoms R & D 2 group.
Key functions
Under the guidance of the Line Manager, the jobholder is expected to perform (but is not limited to) the following tasks:
1. Carry out, with technical supervision, innovative Baseband solutions to design problems.
2. Contribute to designs of intermediate complexity and size.
3. Contribute towards one or more sections of the overall Baseband design from initial system level specification through to mass production.
4. Write appropriate SW to verify hardware functions.
5. Assist the other team members with their work, technically supporting a maximum of two more junior engineers.
6. Assist in identifying staff training and development needs.
7. Assist in identifying the need to recruit additional members of the team.
8. Be a technical authority in one or more specialist areas.
9. To keep abreast of new developments and techniques in the mobile communication field.
10. Timely provision of progress reports following the attendance of meetings and resulting from other activities undertaken as appropriate.
All work is to be of a professional standard, paying due regard to safety, efficiency, cost effectiveness, time scales and the needs of the company.
Authority
Expected to assist in determining the method and resources required to achieve a strong position for XXX in the global telecommunication hardware arena.
Expected to provide advice to line management regarding all business directives pertaining to XXX and corporate philosophies on future strategy in the telecommunications field.
All expenditure to be approved by the line manager and kept within current company policy and budget constraints.
Skills and experience
� A degree in Computer Science, Electronics, Natural Science, Mathematics, Engineering or any related discipline (an equivalent period of industrial experience may be substituted).
� 5 years experience in microprocessor/microcontroller/ DSP circuits design with enough software knowledge to demonstrate their functionality, preferably in the mobile communication engineering field
� 3 years experience in software design in embedded real time systems.
� A top level understanding of the communications engineering aspects of mobile handset design such as modulation/demodulation, channel coding/decoding and signal processing required for operating in the mobile radio environment.
� Experience of a small number of projects and developments.
� Desired experience of GSM, GPRS and UMTS.
� Proficient in one or more programming languages and development systems.
� A competent level of presentation, communication and planning skills.
� Self motivation and ability to work alone, managing own work and setting sensible priorities according to perceived requirements.
� Analytical and logical thinking capability.
� A good understanding of documentation requirements.
� Ability to learn and implement XXX and Corporate business philosophies.
